The first-person horror game Don’t Drop The Cake, developed solo by Midoriyama, has launched on Steam. The player’s only job is to carry a constantly wobbling cake all the way without dropping it.

The game went live on August 31, 2026, Japan time, though its release date on the Steam store page is listed as August 30, Pacific Time. It’s available for Windows PC. The interface, audio, and subtitles all support Japanese, English, and Simplified Chinese. The game launched simultaneously worldwide on Steam.

Players carry the cake from a first-person perspective. It tilts with every step, and players use mouse movements to counteract the tilt to keep moving forward. Strange, inhuman figures appear along the way, so players must flee toward their destination while avoiding them. Getting startled or making a mistake sends the cake tipping sharply, so the player’s state of mind is directly reflected in how they handle the cake. Dropping the cake ends the game.

Why is the cake being carried, and who is it for? Those mysteries are revealed gradually as the game progresses. It’s a single-player game.

The full game has a predecessor. In October 2024, Midoriyama released the free preview Don’t Drop The Cake: Prologue on Steam ahead of the full release. According to an August 21, 2026 article from Denfaminicogamer, as of August 18, 2026, 86% of the Prologue’s 147 user reviews were positive, giving it a “Very Positive” rating on Steam. The Prologue is still available, and it now serves as a demo for the full game.

The full release adds new stages, new characters, and new elements, and includes the complete story from beginning to end. Difficulty is adjustable. On the easiest setting, the cake won’t wobble unless the mouse is moved. There are also multiple checkpoints along the way.
