SEGA announced on October 26, 2026 that SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, about two years after its 2024 launch. The count combines physical and digital copies across all platforms. One package includes a remaster with two Sonics and a new game starring Shadow. It runs on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).

The game hit 1 million in October 2024 and 2 million in January 2025. On Steam, 96% of about 9,100 English reviews are positive (as of October 26, 2026). According to SEGA, the Sonic the Hedgehog series has passed 1.77 billion units in total, counting both full games and free-to-play games.

One of the two games is a remaster of SONIC GENERATIONS. Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic race through 3D and 2D stages. You rescue Chao hidden in the stages, and a museum lets you peek behind the scenes of development.

The other is a new game starring Shadow. Shadow uses new abilities to take on a nemesis, and also surfs and flies. With Chaos Control, Shadow can stop time. Sonic’s and Shadow’s stories each begin with a rift in time and space created by a mysterious monster.

It’s single-player, available in a standard edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition. The Digital Deluxe Edition comes with the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack and more.

Shadow’s time-stopping stages look set to require a different approach to running than the stages featuring the two Sonics. With surfing and flight added, there’s good reason to expect that even stages built on the same high speed will feel different from scene to scene.
