STRANGER THAN HEAVEN Director Says He Focused on “How to Lie,” Not Historical Accuracy

Mikinobu Abe discussed the development approach for STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, his directorial debut and a new title from SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. In an interview tied to the title’s first public hands-on showing at gamescom 2026, Abe explained that rather than recreating historical fact, he focused on how to craft “lies” as a game and as entertainment. According to Abe, the team layered in everyday moments — such as protagonist Makoto Daito looking at a restaurant menu to decide what to eat — aiming to create a sense of living and growing alongside Daito.
