KONAMI has revealed a brand-new action-adventure game, Rhapsody in Scarlet. There had been no prior teaser, and this marked the game’s first public reveal.
The announcement came during PlayStation’s State of Play broadcast, which aired at 10pm JST on September 3 (9am ET in North America, the same day). The genre is officially listed as action. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam (PC), with KONAMI developing and publishing. The release date has not been set, and the rating is still under review.
The story is set in 1920s New York, a city alive with jazz. The protagonist is Ellie Myers, a young magus working as a jazz singer. After arriving in New York, she becomes entangled in a mysterious mafia conspiracy and meets Ilya Jones, who leads a magic organization known as the Seekers. Together, Ellie and Ilya stand against a threat that could upset the balance of the world. The game’s tagline is “Magick Never Misses a Beat.”
In battle, Ellie fights with the help of a magical creature called a beast, combining melee, ranged, and area attacks into extended combos. Among the beasts revealed so far is Sköll, a fire wolf who fights at her side.
The voice cast differs between the Japanese and English versions. In Japanese, Ellie is voiced by Akari Kito and Ilya by Saori Onishi. In English, Ellie is voiced by Cherami Leigh and Ilya by Hannah Grace. Co-producer Takanori Murayama spoke about the cast during the broadcast, saying, in essence, that the story had evolved beyond what the development team had originally envisioned.
The theme song, “Cool/Hot,” was created by Emi Meyer and the jazz band SOIL&“PIMP”SESSIONS, with lyrics by Emi Meyer, composition by Shacho, and arrangement by SOIL&“PIMP”SESSIONS. In 2005, the band won the John Peel Play More Jazz Award at BBC Radio 1’s WORLDWIDE AWARDS, and has gone on to perform at festivals including Glastonbury, Montreux, and North Sea Jazz, playing shows in 31 countries. Emi Meyer was born in Kyoto, raised in Seattle, and is now based in both Japan and the United States.
