Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin major update out early on Steam

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin has begun early testing on Steam of its first major update in about five years: New Game Plus, new outfits and a 9,999 rice cap.

Early testing has begun for the first major update in about five years for Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, the action RPG released in 2020. Testing started on August 25, 2026, and the update is available to try via Steam’s beta feature.

At the center of the new content is a system named “再誕”, essentially a New Game Plus. Players can choose what to carry over — the strength of their rice, combat skills, items, equipment and more — and then play through the game again from the beginning. The deepest floor of the dungeon Amagaeshi Shrine is also accessible right from the start. Many new character conversation events and cutscenes are added as well.

The range of available equipment is expanding too. Three additions are coming: “武神の狩猟着”, “豊穣神の狩猟着”, and the “ゆるタマシリーズ”, whose abilities change from day to day. Also included is “早着替え”, a quick-change function that lets players register equipment combinations as favorites and switch to them quickly. The maximum amount of rice that can be carried is being raised from 999 to 9,999. Caps for other items stay at 999. There are 43 additions, fixes and adjustments in total.

The developer is Edelweiss, the studio headed by Nal (@nal_ew). According to Nal, as of August 25 the update is all but fully implemented and is now awaiting translation. No date has been set for the official release, and no timing has been announced for other platforms such as PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is an RPG that combines rice farming with action, and cumulative worldwide shipments have passed 1.5 million units. In North America, XSEED Games and Marvelous USA, Inc. released it in November 2020. The Steam version supports six languages: English, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Latin American Spanish.
