You can equip the protagonists of past FINAL FANTASY games in battle. FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is the first game in the series to use HD-2D, a style that layers pixel-art characters over 3D backgrounds, and it launches October 22, 2026. It’s a single-player RPG for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam and Xbox on PC), with English and Japanese voice audio and English text.

Combat is turn-based: you pick commands and play out each round. Those past protagonists appear as Visions, echoes of the series’ heroes. Equip one to take on a powerful foe, and resonating with that Vision lets you unleash a special move. Espers, which can turn the tide of a battle, fight at your side.

Jobs and airships, both series staples, return as well.

The story is based on Season 1 of the mobile game FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS, with the dialogue, visuals and even the systems heavily reworked for home consoles. SQUARE ENIX and LANCARSE are developing it. A video message featuring the producer has also been released.

The demo lets you play all of Chapter 1 and is available now. Its save data carries over to the full game. There’s also a Digital Deluxe Edition with bonuses, plus a Collector’s Edition.

You can combine past protagonists’ Visions with espers in the same turn-based battles. Longtime series players will likely enjoy deciding which Vision to equip.
