Golden Axe, the action game SEGA released in 1989, is becoming an animated series, with all 10 episodes streaming exclusively on Paramount+ starting September 16, 2026.
The headline of SEGA’s press release, issued on August 21 Japan time, reads “U.S. streaming launch” — it does not say the series is streaming worldwide simultaneously.
The series is produced by CBS Studios in the US. Production is a joint effort by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions (CBS Studios’ animation division), Sony Pictures Television, and Original Film. Animation production is handled by Titmouse. Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler co-created the series and co-wrote the first episode. Both serve as executive producers, with Chandler also acting as showrunner.
Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, and Toru Nakahara of SEGA serve as executive producers.
In the anime, Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead reunite for a journey to rescue Yuria from the demon Death Adder — who refuses to stay dead once defeated. Joining them is Hampton Squib, an inexperienced adventurer with outsized dreams.
The voice cast includes Matthew Rhys as Gilius Thunderhead, Danny Pudi as Hampton Squib, Lisa Gilroy as Tyris Flare, Liam McIntyre as Ax Battler, and Carl Tart as Chronos “Evil” Lait. SEGA’s release introduces Rhys as an Emmy Award-winning actor. Gilius is a grumpy, unkempt dwarf warrior, Tyris is a sharp-tongued sorceress, and Chronos “Evil” Lait is a humanoid leopard.
The original is a fantasy action game SEGA released in 1989. The story centered on a quest to defeat the demon who seized a god-forged axe called the Golden Axe. In this release, SEGA states that it will accelerate its expansion into media and merchandising beyond games by leveraging its own IP, positioning transmedia as a key strategy.
