Two RPGs that debuted in the 1990s under the name Lufia are coming back in 2027. Development reportedly got underway after calls to revive the series came from outside Japan.

Taito (TAITO CORPORATION) gave Lufia I & II The Sinistrals Saga its world premiere during the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct 2026 broadcast on September 20. The game bundles Lufia & the Fortress of Doom and Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, both originally released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super NES) in the 1990s, into a single package. It’s coming to Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Steam, and the Steam store page is already live.

Requests to revive the series had been especially strong from outside Japan, and Taito says it had been working on the project for more than five years in response. Masahide Miyata, the series’ original planner, is also involved, helping with adjustments for the move to current hardware. On the official teaser site, Miyata said that having fans still cheering for a game he made more than a quarter-century ago is what makes being a game creator worthwhile.

Taito is developing and publishing the game, with Clear River Games handling sales in Europe and North America.

The two games’ original release order is the reverse of the story’s chronology. Lufia & the Fortress of Doom follows a protagonist descended from a legendary hero, alongside Lufia, a girl carrying a fated burden. Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals is a prequel, following Maxim and his companions before he’s hailed as a hero. Within the story itself, II comes first. II was known for a turn-based system in which characters move one step at a time, dungeons built around action puzzles, raising capsule monsters, and roguelike stages.

The pixel art stays true to the originals, with added features meant to make the games easier to play. Battles are turn-based and command-driven, and the game is single-player only. It’s set to launch in 2027; the exact month hasn’t been announced.
