Capcom launched Onimusha Curious Cases, a video series introducing the characters of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, on August 17, 2026. The series consists of nine episodes, releasing through September 3.
Episode 1 introduces the protagonist, Miyamoto Musashi, voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya. According to Capcom’s introduction, Musashi is a hot-blooded warrior who comes to Kyoto to master the way of the sword, only for the power of the oni to twist that path in strange directions. The series is narrated by the Oni Lady, voiced by Aya Endo. The Oni Lady, a woman from a clan of oni, resides within Musashi’s Oni Gauntlet; she normally supports Musashi in battle from inside the gauntlet and occasionally offers advice.
The release schedule for the following episodes has also been announced. Sasaki Ganryu (voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto) is featured on August 19, Rasho-gan (voiced by Yasuhiro Mamiya) on August 21, Shuten Doji (voiced by Shinnosuke Ogami) on August 25, Daidara (voiced by Kenta Miyake) on August 27, and Dokyo (voiced by Riho Fushida) on September 1. As of August 17, Capcom had not announced who would be featured on August 31, September 2, and September 3.
The game is set in early Edo-period Kyoto, overrun by strange apparitions. Musashi’s fate is thrown off course after he obtains the Oni Gauntlet, and he fights creatures known as Genma. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is set to launch on Friday, September 4, 2026. Capcom’s official site states that the release date was moved up from the originally planned September 25.
The actor Toshiro Mifune served as the face model for Miyamoto Musashi. The development team discussed how that casting came about in a March 2025 interview with Famitsu. Director Satoru Nihei said the image of a grounded, realistic samurai who fights in a rough, unrefined way suited Musashi, and that Mifune’s image matched that vision; that match became the deciding factor. Nihei also said that because the game is Onimusha’s first new entry in about 20 years, the team rebuilt the setting — including the Genma and the oni clans — from the ground up.
Producer Akihito Kadowaki said negotiations with Mifune Productions took a long time. Even once a prototype of the game was ready, negotiations to secure Mifune’s participation were still ongoing. Because casting Mifune was one of the non-negotiable conditions for the project, Kadowaki said the team negotiated persistently. He had also heard that Mifune’s name had previously come up internally at Capcom as a candidate for the Onimusha protagonist. Some of the people they were negotiating with were not familiar with games, so the team repeatedly presented concrete examples and showed them what had actually been made.
