When one emperor falls, the next takes up the fight. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, a single-player RPG, has passed 1 million copies worldwide, SQUARE ENIX announced on October 23. The figure combines shipments and digital downloads. That’s about two years after the game launched in October 2024 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC (Steam).
The game is a full 3D remake of 1993’s Romancing SaGa 2. You play an emperor and take down the Seven Heroes one by one. When an emperor dies in battle or of old age, the heir inherits that emperor’s skills and spells, and may be able to beat enemies the previous generation couldn’t. This handover is called Imperial Succession. Party members can be recruited from more than 30 classes.

Keep fighting with weapons or martial arts, and a lightbulb may flash over a character’s head as they learn a new skill. That’s Glimmer. Party layout shapes combat too: depending on the Formation you pick, each position gains stat boosts or becomes harder to hit. Outside battle, you invest in new skills, spells, weapons and facilities to strengthen the empire itself.
You also decide the order of the story. After the opening events, the order you pick changes the world and how time moves forward. This system is called Free-Form Scenario. Akitoshi Kawazu, SaGa Franchise General Director, said in a video marking the milestone that the game reached a million copies while giving players a huge range of genuine choices.

Skills learned through Glimmer pass to the next emperor as well, so each new emperor’s fighting style can build on the last.
A Steam demo covers the early story, up to Emperor Leon taking on Kzinssie of the Seven Heroes. Demo save data carries over to the full game. For the 1 million milestone, an illustration by the game’s main illustrator was also released.
