If Yasumi Matsuno made a new Vagrant Story, he would want the allies to be ordinary people who are no help in a fight. The creator of Vagrant Story said so on X. This is not an announcement of a new game. It’s an idea Matsuno laid out as a personal dream, and Famitsu also reports that no new game is being planned. It would be set in a sealed-off city, where you would scavenge weapons, armor, and items to stay alive while helping trapped survivors escape.

Akitoshi Kawazu of the SaGa series asked on X what a new Vagrant Story might look like, and Matsuno answered at length.

The idea rests on an RPG that combines third-person 3D action with command-based play. Matsuno sees no point in following the same path as ELDEN RING or The Legend of Zelda. The question that matters is where the game can be original, given those games.

The idea of allies goes back to the original game. Hardware limits led the team to drop the idea of traveling with companions. According to Matsuno, that idea later came to life in FINAL FANTASY XII. For a new game, he says he would want the allies not to be fighters but ordinary people who get in the way.

Each survivor would have their own reason to live and their own abilities. Depending on how you play, some survivors might not be saved. Matsuno says there could be situations where rescuing one person means another can’t be rescued. Talking with survivors would gradually reveal the story’s secrets.

Since conversations with survivors would lead to the story’s secrets, the story you see seems likely to change with whom you manage to save.

Kawazu replied that it sounded like a nerve-racking game, and wrote that he hoped it would become real someday.
