According to estimates from Alinea Analytics, a game market research firm, the daily player count for the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 rose an estimated 48%, from about 78,000 to about 116,000, around the release of the live-action Resident Evil movie.
The film is an entirely new live-action reboot of the series, directed by Zach Cregger and released by Sony Pictures on September 18. It follows a man who takes on a job delivering medical supplies and finds himself fighting to survive in a Raccoon City turned into a living hell. Resident Evil 2 is set in that same Raccoon City.
In the game, players control Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield, exploring the zombie-infested Raccoon City Police Department from a third-person perspective. Ammunition and healing items are both limited. Players can fight zombies and other monsters with guns and melee attacks, or slip past them instead. Progress means collecting keys and emblems to open doors, solving puzzles inside the station, and mixing herbs to restore health along the way. A free demo, the RESIDENT EVIL 2 R.P.D. Demo, is available on PlayStation 4.
The same estimates show Resident Evil 3 up about 25%, Resident Evil 4 up about 24%, and the newest entry, 2026’s Resident Evil Requiem, up about 20%.
Sales moved too. Comparing the week after the movie’s release with the two weeks before it, Alinea Analytics estimates that PlayStation 5 sales of Resident Evil 2 nearly doubled, while sales of Resident Evil 4 rose 77%. Alinea Analytics attributes most of that growth to a Capcom sale that had already started on September 10, eight days before the movie’s release, with the movie’s effect layered on top of it. Alinea Analytics also estimates that daily revenue for the PlayStation 5 version of the newest title, Requiem, fell about 4% during the movie’s opening weekend.
Stepping into the same city depicted in the movie and counting every remaining bullet along the way looks set to draw movie audiences into the game.
