The soldier who walks out through the gate in Attack on Titan 3 is one you made yourself. Koei Tecmo Games’ third Attack on Titan game hands the player an original protagonist called HERO, a member of the Scout Regiment — the unit that goes outside the walls into Titan territory — who appears nowhere in the manga. HERO’s face and the look of their gear are set in a character creator before any of that starts.

What the player does with that soldier is run expeditions. HERO recruits other soldiers, forms a squad out of them, and takes that squad beyond the walls to search Titan territory for materials and for the belongings of the dead. Movement runs on omni-directional mobility gear: gas throws the soldier into the air, anchors swing them around, and the distance to a Titan closes fast. Gas burns as it fires. Blades wear down the same way, and there is a limit on how much of either can be carried out of the gate.

Attack on Titan 3 arrives December 10, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Text is available in English; the audio on the official listings is Japanese, and nothing has been announced yet about English voice acting. The player count given is one. Omega Force is developing it — the Koei Tecmo studio behind the Warriors series, Dynasty Warriors included.
From the Underground to the far side of the wall
HERO grew up in the Underground, a closed-off residential district below ground, and has known nowhere else since childhood. That is where the pull comes from: HERO is described as having a strong longing for the world outside the walls. HERO worked in a workshop down there, and it was that craftsmanship that got HERO recruited into the Scout Regiment.
There is a second role waiting. After a certain incident, HERO ends up instructing the 104th Training Corps, the 104th intake of the unit that turns recruits into soldiers. HERO is also described as going a long way back with Levi and Hans Zoe.
Gas, blades and the Titans on the other end
Combat arts spend a dedicated gauge and come in three families: chained strikes, wide attacks, and damage aimed at specific parts of a Titan’s body. Customizing the gear changes what HERO can do with it, adding hits to a chain or strengthening the links between boost moves.
The Titans on the other end are not uniform. Abnormal Titans are the ones that do not move the way they are supposed to, and they run their own behavior patterns. The Nine Titans, the nine special Titans the manga names as such, each bring their own behavior and their own level of threat. Characters from the anime can come along on a mission and join in on a takedown. Three difficulty styles are offered, one of them Casual Mode, with finer adjustment available on top.
Outside the walls: no head-on fights, and supplies that run out
The expedition itself is the new mode, and it has a name: Exterior Scouting Missions. Materials and recovered belongings go to an officer in exchange for rewards. Meeting Titans head-on is not what the mode is built around. Ambushes, collapses, pitfalls — how the ground gets used decides how a mission goes. Gas and blades keep draining, squad members carry morale that has to be managed, and the longer a squad stays out, the thinner its supplies get.
Widening the area a squad can reach means putting up a supply base, and a supply base will not go up until the Titans around the site have been cleared. Safe ground is not handed over at the start. It gets pushed outward.

The time spent inside the walls
Between expeditions, HERO is back at the Scout Regiment’s headquarters. The scenes there are not drawn from the manga: they are downtime, spent with Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman, Armin Arlert and the rest, and the bonds built in them raise combat performance and unlock events. The Japanese audio is fully voiced.
The squad is run from the same place: recruiting soldiers, sending out rescue missions, and turning materials carried in from outside into new equipment parts and upgrades, cosmetic ones included.

One more thing gets decided there. Before heading out, the player picks one of three dispositions for HERO, and that choice determines which points come in and which skill tree opens. It settles what kind of soldier HERO becomes, and it is set before the gate opens rather than in the middle of a fight.
Being the third game
Attack on Titan 2 came out in March 2018, and this is the third game in the series. Character creation is not new here either; Koei Tecmo has presented it as a feature returning to the series.
What this one leads with is coverage: the story told from beginning to end in a single game. The announcement trailer shown at Summer Game Fest in June included scenes from later in the manga. For anyone who played the first two, that is what the pitch comes down to.
Who you go out as
The manga’s story gets told from beginning to end. What the game puts inside it is one soldier who was never there: someone out of a workshop in the Underground with a pull toward the world outside the walls, who recruits a squad and ends up teaching the 104th Training Corps. Their face, their gear and the kind of soldier they turn into are all set by the player. The story is the one already written. The soldier walking into it on December 10 is the one you built.
