One million copies in a day. Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold more than 1 million copies worldwide on its very first day on sale.

Capcom revealed the figure on September 7, 2026, three days after the game’s September 4 release. The series dates back to its first entry in 2001, but no new mainline console game had appeared since 2006. Twenty years later, this entry reached that sales total in a single day. The series’ cumulative sales have now reached 10 million.

The game is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The PC version is available on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store.

The story is set in early Edo-period Kyoto. Players take control of the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi as he cuts his way through Kyoto while battling the Genma, inhuman enemies. Defense sits at the center of the combat: a well-timed Parry lets players turn aside a blade just as it lands, while Deflect knocks an enemy’s attack back. Once repeated defensive actions break an enemy’s stance, players can land a Break Issen for heavy damage. It’s a swordfighting action game built around turning defense into offense.

The concurrent player count on Steam topped 40,000 on launch day. As of September 4, the game had Metacritic scores of 85 for the PlayStation 5 version and 90 for the Nintendo Switch 2 version.

Capcom ran several demos and hands-on sessions before launch. The company says these efforts helped introduce the game to more players and contributed to this result.
