In MELTY BLOOD: TWI-LUMINA, mashing a button strings together a combo that ends in a special move. That is how the new Act mode works.

The game is a 2D fighter based on TYPE-MOON’s works. It is a new entry that follows 2021’s MELTY BLOOD: TYPE LUMINA, and it is due in early 2027. The series’ traditional command inputs also remain available in Duel mode. If mashing takes you all the way to a special, what is left to gain from learning commands?

What comes out when you mash?

In Act mode, you enter a directional input and press the special button to perform a special move. A single forward input starts a dash. The move that finishes a mashed combo depends on which button you mash.

What is left is flexibility. Duel mode, where you fight with traditional command inputs, gives you more of it. Even so, picking Act reportedly does not put you at a disadvantage.

TWI-LUMINA does not swap command inputs out for one-button specials. It offers the two side by side. Which one will you start with?

What the TOKYO GAME SHOW 2026 demo showed

The hands-on demo at TOKYO GAME SHOW 2026 revealed a new gauge and a new move. The move is an armored overhead that rushes forward.

Seven characters were playable in the demo. Alongside Shiki Tohno and Arcueid Brunestud was Mash Kyrielight, from Fate/Grand Order. Len, who was not playable in the previous game, is playable in this one. Shiki Tohno gains a projectile in this game.

White Len, newly drawn by Takashi Takeuchi, has also been announced as joining. The size of the full roster has not been revealed yet.

Revealed right after the previous game’s grand final

TWI-LUMINA was formally announced in May 2026, on stage at EVO Japan 2026. The title, the logo and footage of the characters in motion were shown right after the grand final of the previous game, MELTY BLOOD: TYPE LUMINA, ended.

FRENCH-BREAD is developing the game, and Aniplex of America is publishing it. The story builds on the world of TYPE-MOON’s TSUKIHIME -A piece of blue glass moon-. The pairing from the previous game continues, with Kinoko Nasu on the original work and Takashi Takeuchi on character design.

TWI-LUMINA is coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Steam (PC). The game supports English text. The official site lists the voice audio as Japanese only.

The previous game used rollback netcode, and the official announcement at the time said it did not support cross-platform play. Online play details for TWI-LUMINA have not been announced yet.

About 20 hours of story, written by Kinoko Nasu

The new Grand Scenario Mode features a scenario newly written by Kinoko Nasu and is described as lasting about 20 hours. The released screenshots show conversations between characters and movement across a map.

Depending on how the story unfolds and which choices you make, battle sections can reportedly come up along the way. The mode is also described as built to give players an entry point into the game.

Play the story first, then take Act mode’s mashing into matches. That looks like a place to start, even before learning command inputs.
