Famitsu published a developer interview about Culdcept BEGINS, the series’ first entirely new entry in ten years, on August 31, 2026. In it, Hideo Suzuki, a board director at Omiya Soft, says that this was the first time the company had provided the Culdcept rule engine to an outside partner.

Culdcept BEGINS launched for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on July 16, 2026, and a Steam version is planned for Q4 2026. Its rules are based on Culdcept Second, and character designer Satoshi Matsuura redesigned the cast. Neos Corporation handled production and direction, while Grounding Inc. handled implementation.

According to Suzuki, what Omiya Soft provided was a set of programs that packaged processes such as ability resolution and mana calculations. He says he had initially worried that, since making a game is hard enough for a single team, multiple teams working together might end up getting in each other’s way. In practice, he says, each team stayed within its own area of responsibility and development went smoothly.

Kohei Takeshige, a producer at JAMSWORKS Co., Ltd., says that as the person receiving the pitch from Neos, he had to think not just about the concept but also about whether it was feasible. Takeshige says he proposed revamping the UI and character designs while adopting the existing rule engine that Omiya Soft could vouch for.

Suzuki says that entrusting the character designs to Matsuura felt a little like giving away a daughter in marriage — a bittersweet feeling. Series game designer Takayuki Jingu explains that he views this game’s place in the series as similar to that of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, which emerged partway through the long-running Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. He also says he hopes it reaches a new generation of players and carries the series into the future.

Takeshige says this is the first time Culdcept has made a full-fledged push overseas. The series has a 30-year history. According to Takeshige, the team received an email from a Korean player who said he had taken part in local tournaments back when the PlayStation 2 version launched in Korea, and who said he was looking forward to this one too.
