The last game didn’t sell at all. That’s how the head of Denneko Yuugi describes Machina of the Planet Tree -Unity Unions-, a 3D third-person shooter from 2020, and the lesson from it was how much marketing matters. The next game, Eternal Palace Sakura, is a 3D roguelite action game: you fight through room after room, and when you go down, you start over. It launches on Steam on November 4 from Denneko Yuugi and Shochiku, and a demo is playable now. It’s single-player and supports English text.

Retla, the protagonist returning from the Machina of the Planet Tree series, climbs floors that are reshuffled every run. Combat rooms won’t let you out until every enemy is down. Between them come healing rooms, shops, and rooms where you choose upgrade items with rarities from C to SS.

Normal and heavy attacks chain together, and canceling mid-chain to build combos raises damage. Time a dodge or a shield block against an enemy attack, and a gauge fills for a special attack. The aim, the head says, was a game where mashing buttons still gets you reasonably far, with clarity above all: button response, the feel of a hit, even an enemy’s status should all carry meaning for play.

Mugen Depth shapes how each run goes. It rises as you advance, making enemies stronger, and you can pay health to lower it. Spend health to weaken enemies, or hold on to it and face tougher ones? Items take their cue from Risk of Rain, reworked for 3D action, and come in attack, defense, element, and shield types.

Button-mashing works as a way in, and the trade between depth and health is there in every run. Action newcomers and players who’d rather push on without lowering Mugen Depth both look likely to find a way to play that fits.

The head recalls that an earlier demo had unclear controls and difficulty tuning that fell short in many places, and drew harsh feedback on Discord.

The head made all of the animation and cutscenes alone and says part of the reason was to promote the game outside Japan.

Balance adjustments and an interface update are planned after launch. Anything beyond that depends on sales, and Shochiku says it feels the same way.
